Resume Under Attack! : Invading Jobs and Harrassment at Work

Cross Posted from  Jan. 10, 2024 1:16am

When I was a young college student, involved with gyaru fashion, blogging, and event coordination, looking feverishly for jobs 14 years ago, I initially did not take into account bad actors who may use my resume for nefarious means. I was unaware of the blindspots I had with this once simple situation.

I had given my resume to a woman who claimed she would assist me in updating it for the jobs that I wanted, and I thought she was doing me a favor. After a quick turnaround time, I was equipped with a shiny new resume, ready to send it to various businesses around my city to support myself and content creation.

Unfortunately, this simplistic act of providing my base resume in 2010ish became a minefield of data for an overeager stranger who was now privy to all the info from the previous jobs that I had good to great standing with, my dear references, and the schools I attended. This breach also allowed her access to where I applied as I had used her and her newly founded group as a job. The jobs I applied for never panned out, and one of my first out of high school jobs was contacted, Dunkin Donuts, and I was let go after being asked invasive and strange questions.

Though I worked hard to help make the group credible via providing photography, appearances and content, it did not give me the ROI and peace of mind I thought it would. If I were to do things differently, I would have sought assistance from a trusted source at my school, looked for templates online, and at the very least, interviewed her to see why she wanted to help with my resume so badly or just get tips instead of showcasing that data. Perhaps this can help other young people who may be in a similar situation to avoid the stress and attacks on their career.
